When Jarrod Gorbel began writing new songs for his band The Honorary Title last year, he was exhausted from the trip his musical career had taken. He had dealt with an ever-changing band lineup, label switches, personal demons and crises, and the overall ego battering that comes with the current evolution of the music industry. "It was kind of like VH1's Behind The Music, minus the fame or wealth," says the singer-songwriter, whose new album Devil's Made A New Friend will be his debut release under his own name. "But all of those experiences made me realize how far away I'd gotten from who I really was, as a person and an artist." Though the past couple years had been a nightmarish rollercoaster ride, they were also part of a crucial rite of passage for Gorbel. By last summer, he knew he had to find a way to create something closer to his own heart: unfiltered, unbiased, produced in a way that didn't veer too far from the songs' original intention. The results are Gorbel's best songs yet, mining classic soul, traditional folk and Americana, and incorporating strings, horns and female backing vocals for a sound more lush and organic than any of his previous work.
For the first time in years, Gorbel was able to record the songs without the supervision of a record label. He had the freedom to take risks with the more folk tinged-songs and had no one to satisfy but himself. This freedom paired with the shedding of the band name gave way to new sounds. From the Seventies folk- and soul-inspired album opener "Extraordinary," to the massive string-led "I'll Do Better," Devil's Made A New Friend is set of 10 songs that capture an artist, as he puts it "starting over, going back to the beginning, and re-establishing myself."
Devil's Made A New Friend will be released on August 31st; after his experiences with traditional labels, Gorbel opted to put out the album as a joint venture with Burning-house records, a new company helmed by a trusted friend and colleague, and his own imprint 'Gorbel Music'. "At first, it was hard to just accept that I'd have to take a few steps back in order to get where I wanted to go," says Gorbel. "But I wanted to make the record i had always envisioned, and needed to sacrifice in order to move forward musically, it was risky going solo but it just felt like a truthful and meaningful venture to take.

Torches - (Set time: 10:00 PM)

Los Angeles trio Torches just self-released its new album, Heads Full Of Rust, earlier this week. The effort, produced by Raymond Richards (Local Natives) and David Newton (The Soft Pack, The Henry Clay People), is a collection of lush indie rock numbers that feel like distant cousins of The Shins and Death Cab For Cutie. Check out “I Want Something.” It's an earnest track with catchy melodies and an underlying sense of yearning – just in case you’re feeling a little angsty today. - RCRD LBL
"Psychedelia is often paired with a slow haziness or fervent rock rhythms that jam to no end, but it’s nice to hear that the genre can also intertwine with delicate melancholy that pleasantly lingers somewhere in the middle. Azad Cheikosman, Bridgette Moody and Eric Fabbro of L.A. band Torches manage to perform the latter quite beautifully." - Kevin Bronson, www.buzzbands.la

Miracle Days (LP release) - (Set time: 9:00 PM)

The origins of Miracle Days began in Orange County, California, where randomly, a few passionate and determined musicians crossed paths. Sharing a love for well-crafted songs with meaningful lyrics, a band and strong friendships ensued. Miracle Days took solid form in 1993 and began releasing a string of demos. However, the band didn’t hit its stride until the final permanent members, drummer Russ Simms and manager Sam Babikian, came aboard. With the lineup complete, Miracle Days went on to play an endless string of venues, most notably, The Whiskey, Bogarts in Long Beach, HB Pier Plaza, The Coach House, and the Galaxy Concert Theatre. Though out the years Miracle Days has shared the stage with many major acts passing through Southern California, including, The Refreshments, Cola, Low and Sweet Orchestra, Harvey Danger, Dial 7, Bang, Untouchables, Human Waste Project, and Something Corporate. After several published reviews, radio spotlight coverages, and a continually growing loyal following throughout Los Angeles and Orange County, Miracle Days left its mark in music history. In 1997, working with the infamous producer and engineer, E, at For The Record, Miracle Days released it debut full length album, Standing On the Edge of Panic, to rave reviews. After several more years of performing and recording, the members decided to pursue other projects. Sharing a strong friendship and musical bond that wouldn't soon be forgotten, the band never officially broke up. With the encouragement of peers and fans, and a general love for music, the members of Miracle Days are now in the process of writing and recording new material.
Midi Matilda - (Set time: 8:00 PM)

The indie electro-pop duo Midi Matilda has barely begun their career yet has already made a permanent impression on the music community. The Bay Area outfit exploded onto the online scene with dozens of enthusiastic mentions about their debut single, “Day Dream,” including The Huffington Post and Neon Gold Records, which propelled them to an impressive near-top placement on The Hype Machine. In addition, the accompanying self-produced music video for that single, has garnered extensive positive attention across varied media formats that includes radio, as well as online.
Midi Matilda was born of gifted musical poets Skyler Kilborn and Logan Grimé, who serendipitously met in college in 2008, while learning the production skills they would ultimately use to form this innovative and self-contained project. They have been making music together since, and ever evolving in their collaborative sound. Their refreshing style brings together the best of live instrumentation, synthesizers, gorgeous vocals, and the open spaces of consciousness, to take all who listen on a journey into the ether.
