Joy Kills Sorrow - (Set time: 8:00 PM)
Joy Kills Sorrow
With its bold new brand of acoustic music, Joy Kills Sorrow pushes right through the envelope and out the other side. The Boston-based stringband brings a decidedly modern sensibility to an old-world sound, channeling the prodigious talents of its individual members into elegant arrangements and well-crafted songs. While the group pays due homage to its Bluegrass roots—its name is taken from WJKS, a radio station that broadcasted the Monroe brothers' show in the 1930s—the band truly excels in its rich and textured treatment of more contemporary material. Boasting a full arsenal of original songs, Joy Kills Sorrow plumbs the entire spectrum of its spare instrumentation, effortlessly merging influences as diverse as folk, rock, pop, and jazz. The music that emerges is dark and often funny, ruminating on modern life and love with eloquence and wit. The result is a radical new strain of folk music, one that bravely breaks with tradition even as it salutes the past.

Since its inception, Joy Kills Sorrow has performed at theaters, listening rooms, and festivals across the continent and has been featured on nationally syndicated radio programs. In 2007, the group won first prize in the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Band Contest; that same year, they were deemed the "'poster children' for the burgeoning Americana format" by Sing Out! magazine. The band has evolved considerably in the years since then, and their sophomore effort promises to deliver. Slated for release February 23 on Signature Sounds, the new album, entitled Darkness Sure Becomes This City, was produced by Eric Merrill and features a wealth of original material from members of Joy Kills Sorrow as well as some fine new songs from other composers. Darkness Sure Becomes This City is an accomplished piece of work, laced throughout with polished arrangements and pop-inflected melodies. With it, Joy Kills Sorrow gracefully combines the old and the new, and the outcome, however surprising, is sublime.
The Well Pennies - (Set time: 7:00 PM)
The Well Pennies
The Well Pennies are an indie folk/pop duo consisting of husband and wife team, Bryan & Sarah Vanderpool. With a sound that blends 60's folk, 70's pop and a little Americana, The Well Pennies strive for a vibe that is new and old at the same time; taking influence from Feist, Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine and Nickel Creek.

Though raised in two different parts of the country and on different kinds of music, their paths eventually crossed while working on solo careers in the Boston folk music scene. Their collaboration first started after frequently sitting in on each other's gigs, helping with harmonies and extra instrumentation. It didn't take long for the two to attempt writing songs together and from there a partnership developed. The duo then began playing throughout Boston and New York City at popular venues like Club Passim, Lizard Lounge, The Living Room and Rockwood Music Hall. Seeking more opportunities for publishing, the couple moved to Los Angeles in 2009 where they currently reside.

Bryan (guitars, banjo, percussion, vocals) grew up in Massachusetts spending the majority of his childhood obsessed with music. He began studying jazz percussion at the age of 9, continuing on through high school involved in jazz ensembles and leading the drum line in marching band. At 17, he taught himself guitar and quickly developed his own unique rhythmic picking style - a combination of tradional folk picking and frailing clawhammer.

Sarah (pianos, accordion, vocals) spent her childhood in Des Moines, Iowa listening to Doo-Wop records and 70's rock. Classically trained in piano from age 13, she began writing music and performing locally in her teens along with traveling throughout the country in chamber choirs and vocal ensembles. Being a multi-instrumentalist, she learned guitar and has also been known to break out an accordion during shows.

The Well Pennies recorded their first project, The Well Pennies [EP], with producer Michael Woodrum (Joss Stone, BC Jean) which was released in January 2012. The 6-song collection, available on iTunes, is an upbeat, rootsy, pop mix full of catchy melodies, beautiful harmonies and a toe-tapping groove. The Well Pennies explain that "our goal was to write songs that inspire something - however simple - to smile, to love, to get out and experience life."
